Synthetic respondents handled certain tasks well. They identified surface-level trends, maintained consistent response patterns, and processed information quickly. When asked factual questions or presented with straightforward preference scenarios, synthetic participants provided usable data.

When Synthetic Respondents Cannot Replace Humans

However, the limitations became clear when research demanded emotional insight or irrational human motivations. AI can report that most people prefer soft toilet paper, but it struggles to explain why that preference exists or what emotional drivers influence the choice.

We also hit engineering limits: API quotas from foundational models like Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT can bottleneck parallel synthetic respondents, and scaling to research-sized panels exposes speed and access constraints.

The Verdict

Synthetic respondents work for specific applications where consistency matters more than emotional nuance. They supplement human participants by handling tasks where emotional depth matters less than data volume, such as codifying straightforward preferences or evaluating surface-level trends.
