In-Store Intercepts: Real Shelves, Real Shoppers, Real Decisions
Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 2:00 PM ET — Most packaging research happens in a controlled environment. Respondents evaluate carefully because they know that is the task. Then the packaging goes to the shelf, and a real shopper gives it three to five seconds.
What we will cover
The say-do gap between what shoppers tell you and what they reach for. The full range of intercept options, from observation and tallying to shelf redesign, prototype and price testing, and moderated sessions. How to design a study around a specific decision: framing the question, control versus test structure, and store selection.
What happens in the field
Site recon, staffing, shelf setup, daily reset, and prototype chain of custody. How moderators approach shoppers at the shelf and run longer scheduled sessions for depth. What you get back: behavioral counts, shopper voice, visual record, and a live client report that updates during the field — plus who handles what, so you know exactly what to bring.

Speakers

Jen Jump — Business Development Executive, L&E Research
With six years in qualitative research, Jen partners with corporate brands at L&E Research, specializing in CPG. She started as a recruiter and moved through project support, project management, and account management before stepping into business development. That path gives her a working knowledge of every stage of a study, from screener and quota design to the logistics of getting the right people in the room on the right day — which means clients get realistic feasibility up front instead of surprises in field.

John Lathrop — Client Services Manager, L&E Research
John manages client services at L&E Research's Columbus facility, overseeing fieldwork execution, study logistics, and the participant experience — from the first confirmation call to the moment respondents walk out the door. That daily proximity to field gives him a clear read on what makes a study run well and what quietly derails one. His approach is operations first, so clients spend less time managing logistics and more time listening to their participants.

Karen Hines, Ph.D. — Partner and Senior Social Sciences Researcher, Illuminology
Karen gets excited when conventional assumptions get turned on their head by real human insights. She specializes in both qualitative and quantitative methods; on the qualitative side she designs and leads focus groups, in-depth interviews, and contextual inquiries that uncover the why behind how people actually think, feel, and behave. Whether partnering with corporate clients on marketing and product design or collaborating with community organizations, she guides projects start to finish.
